What causes CLL/SLL?

Doctors don't know exactly what causes chronic lymphocytic leukemia (CLL) and small lymphocytic lymphoma (SLL). There are certain factors, however, that may slightly raise a person’s risk of developing CLL/SLL. These factors include older age, male gender, having a first-degree relative with CLL, exposure to Agent Orange (a chemical used during the Vietnam War), or having a higher than usual level of lymphocytes (called monoclonal B-cell lymphocytosis).
